Memorial Ride for David Sherman

November 3, 2009

Hello Friends,

Many of you have heard about the fatal hit and run two weeks ago involving David Sherman. By all accounts David was a great guy who embraced life and cycling. A ride in his honor is taking place on November 15 from the Fitness Center in High Point. Here are a few more details from ride organizer Don Shaw:

“Duncan Chapman, Robert Lippitt and I are leading an effort to organize a bike ride honoring Dave Sherman. It is going to be held on Sunday afternoon, November 15th, starting at 1:30 pm.
We will start and finish at the Fitness Center, with ride distances of 25-30 and 40-50 miles. Most likely, we’ll head out to the Caraway area, similar to the Pedal Push routes.

Tell everybody you know who rides a bike……and those who don’t, but might like to be a part of this. There will be plenty of stuff to do leading up to and including ride day, for those who would like to volunteer their time.

While we will not be charging an entry fee per se, we want to accept donations which will be given to a worthy cause identified by Dave’s family. If you want to check it out, it’s www.yieldtolife.org. Started by professional cyclist Dave Zabriskie, it goes to the heart of what we all face on the road: coexisting with motorists.

Thanks for coming together for this effort. It will mean a great deal to the family and friends of Dave and (we hope) get enough media coverage to send a message to the car and truck drivers out there that when bikes meet cars, bike lose. Folks have simply got to start being more attentive and less pissed off about being behind a bike on a road they have just as much right to use.”

We will keep you all informed as ride details emerge.

Please ride safely out there!
